In outdoor photovoltaic systems and power plants, the MC4 photovoltaic connector is a small, inconspicuous component. Many contractors and companies inadvertently overlook its existence. However, it connects photovoltaic modules, inverters, combiner boxes, and other equipment. Many customers have reported that some of the connectors they previously used would oxidize, weather, or even cause fires within 2-3 years. This forced them to replace the MC4 connectors regularly every 2-3 years, wasting significant manpower and money. What are the reasons behind this?
Some connector shells are made of cheap PC material and contain a large amount of recycled material to reduce costs. As a result, the MC4 connector shell has virtually no UV resistance. Under long-term exposure to wind and sun, the material molecules break down, causing the shell to crack and crumble easily (weathering). Moisture, salt spray, and acidic gases in the air enter the MC4 connector, accelerating the oxidation and corrosion of the hardware.
Some MC4 connectors use brass or even iron as the conductive carrier inside. These materials have poor conductivity, high resistance, and generate a lot of heat, which can even cause a fire in severe cases.
Some connectors do not meet high waterproof ratings (such as IP67/IP68). Exposure to wind, rain, and extreme temperature fluctuations can cause thermal expansion and contraction, allowing moisture and dust to enter the connector. Over time, this can lead to oxidation and corrosion of the internal metal components, increased resistance, and even a fire hazard.
Long Design Life: Matching the 25-year lifespan of photovoltaic modules. Does the manufacturer guarantee a lifespan of over 25 years?
Authoritative Certifications: Passing authoritative industry certifications such as UL TUV certification. This indicates rigorous testing for waterproofing, oxidation, high and low temperature resistance, and electrical aging. Can the manufacturer provide UL TUV certification certificates?
High-Quality Materials: The shell is made of PPO (PPE) material, which is UV resistant, high and low temperature resistant, and has UL-94V0 flame retardancy.
High Sealing Performance: Achieving an IP68 waterproof rating, completely isolating moisture.
Low Resistance Hardware: The conductor material is tin-plated copper. The tin plating layer is oxidation resistant, and copper has low resistance, maintaining a resistance of ≤0.5Ω over a long period. If these conditions are not met, you may face system failure or even a fire three years from now, resulting in huge economic losses. Every penny saved on connectors could be repaid a hundredfold in the future. Choosing MC4 photovoltaic connectors that can withstand the test of time ensures peace of mind.
